The Challenge
Drain Alert were commissioned to survey the public adopted sewer crossing the development boundary of the St John’s Quarter site — a major new development on the former Granada Studios site in Manchester. The survey was required to confirm the layout, condition, diameters, gradients, and connectivity of the sewer network within and adjacent to the site, extending 50 metres upstream and downstream of each manhole. All works had to comply with United Utilities’ requirements — including the use of explosion-proof (Zone 2 rated) CCTV equipment, as all United Utilities wastewater assets are classified under DSEAR.

Our Solution
Drain Alert deployed explosion-proof Ex-rated CCTV equipment and worked in full compliance with all British Standards, industry guidelines, and United Utilities requirements. Extensive traffic management and out-of-hours working was undertaken in conjunction with Manchester City Council. Deliverables included full pipe condition reports, manhole inspection record cards for every structure, dye testing connectivity confirmation, and a complete set of risk assessments and method statements including confined space certificates and United Utilities access permits.
The Outcome
Roc Consulting received a fully compliant, comprehensive drainage survey package — providing the complete sewer network picture required to support the planning and development process at St John’s Quarter. All works delivered safely, on programme, and in compliance with both Manchester City Council and United Utilities.
